Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri will testify tomorrow in a Los Angeles court. Lawyers for the plaintiffs in the case are attempting to prove that the social media platform's design could dangerously lead to addiction in children and young adults.

In this high-profile lawsuit, social media platform Instagram and its parent company Meta, as well as Google's video platform YouTube, are named as defendants.

According to AFP, this case could set a legal precedent regarding whether the social media tycoon intentionally designed the addiction to children.

This week, lawyers for both sides made their opening statements to the jury. YouTube's lawyer, Luis Li, emphasized that YouTube is neither intentionally addictive nor a true form of social media.

The civil lawsuit in a California court focuses on allegations made by 20-year-old Kaley G.M., who claims she was addicted to social media as a child, causing serious psychological harm.

According to the lawsuit, Kelly started using YouTube at age 6 and registered for Instagram at age 11.

Plaintiff's attorney Mark Lanier told the jury yesterday that both YouTube and Meta used addictive methods to attract more users and generate revenue. "They don't just make apps, they make traps."

Social media companies are currently facing hundreds of lawsuits alleging that their content is addictive for young people and can cause users to suffer from depression, eating disorders, mental illness, hospitalization, and even suicide.

The plaintiff's lawyers drew on the strategy used in the lawsuits against tobacco companies in the 1990s and 2000s, in which the same lawsuits argued that the companies knowingly sold harmful products.
